Living in a Notopia

From the Dossier of an Ex-Patriot. Charles Shaw, founder and editor of the essential Newtopia Magazine (and a former editor at equally vibrant 3AM Magazine), was recently sentenced to one year in prison for possession of small amounts of marijuana and ecstasy. He’s transformed his legal troubles into an opportunity to advocate against the passage of bill HR 1528, the work of Wisconsin’s bully of a congressman, F. James Sensenbrenner.
This bill would force (yes, that’s the sound of democracy’s sucking chest wound you hear) citizens to inform on drug users. A sample provision, as described in Newtopia: “If a neighbor under 21 mentions buying some marijuana for a party, you would be required to report him or her to the government or risk jail time yourself.”
Kindly consider taking advantage of the letter-writing form that’s been set up to stop passage of this bill. (And honor Charles Shaw’s sacrifice by reading Newtopia.)
