American Taliban on Your Street?

Delightful article by John Sugg in the latest issue of Mother Jones, in which Sugg (who I got to know from his courageous reporting on Israeli espionage) details the latest incarnation of American Taliban to poison the well of civic life. The group that Sugg profiles are called Christian Reconstructionists, whose avowed purpose and long-term goal is "to gain exclusive control over the [political] franchise... Those who refuse to submit publicly... must be denied citizenship," according to Reconstructionist literature. The Reconstructionists apparently claim 20 million members. Sugg goes on:

"The Old Testament--with its 600 or so Mosaic laws--is the inflexible guide for the society... Reconstructionists envision. Government posts would be reserved for the righteous, as long as they are male. There would be thousands of executions a year, with stoning a preferred method because it would turn the deaths into 'community projects,' as movement theologian [Gary] North has noted. Sinners in line for the death penalty would include women who commit adultery or lie about their virginity, blasphemers, witches, children who strike their parents, and gay men."

Whatever else this might bode for American society, it at least helps to bolster the argument that progressives in this country need to start arming. I am ahead of the curve in this effort. The cache already includes a Kalashnikov, a Galil, several pistols, two sniper rifles, a 12-gauge shotgun, a 30.30 carbine, an AR-7--an ingenious rifle, collapseable in four parts that fit in the stock, for those occasions when you'll need a collapseable semi-automatic rifle. And they will arise, I assure you.

For the Christian Taliban are on the march, an army of fascist loons 20 million strong. And they will stop at nothing until you, right-minded secular citizens of America, "submit publicly." Thank God, then, for the right to bear arms.
