From a November 5 article in Editor & Publisher about a Defense Intelligence Agency document from February 2002:
"It shows that an al-Qaeda official [Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi] held by the Americans. . . 'was intentionally misleading the debriefers' in making claims about Iraqi support for al-Qaeda's work with illicit weapons. . ."
According to Newsweek in June 2004, al-Libi was renditioned to Egypt, where this choice "intelligence" morsel was tortured out of him. (Thanks to the Mahablog.)
You've got to hand it to Dick Cheney. Beyond even acquiring Dresser Industries, a company with massive asbestos liability, while CEO of Halliburton, the biggest blunder of his life was conjuring up pretexts to invade Iraq. Yet, undaunted and unashamed, he continues to champion the exact same detainee policy that helped pave his, Iraq's and our road to hell.
